1 Shout out; do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins.

1 Shout out; do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they want God on their side.
3 "Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?" Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day and oppress all your workers.
4 You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?
6 Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
8 Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

9b If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
10 if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.
11 The LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your needs in parched places and make your bones strong, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail.
12 Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.

4: あなたがたは争いといさかいのために／不正の拳で殴るために、断食している。／今日のように断食しているのは／自分の声を高みで響かせるためではない。
5: このようなものが私の選ぶ断食／苦行の日であろうか。／葦のようにその頭を垂れ／粗布を敷き、灰をまくことなのか。／これを、あなたは断食と呼び／主に喜ばれる日と呼ぶのか。
6: 私が選ぶ断食とは／不正の束縛をほどき、軛の横木の縄を解いて／虐げられた人を自由の身にし／軛の横木をことごとく折ることではないのか。
7: 飢えた人にパンを分け与え／家がなく苦しむ人々を家に招くこと／裸の人を見れば服を着せ／自分の肉親を助けることではないのか。
8: その時、曙のようにあなたの光は輝き出し／あなたの傷は速やかに癒やされる。／あなたの義があなたを先導し／主の栄光があなたのしんがりを守る。
9: その時、あなたが呼べば主は応え／あなたが助けを求めて叫べば／「私はここにいる」と言われる。もしあなたの中から／軛を負わせることや指をさすこと／悪事を語ることを取り去るなら
10: 飢えている人に心を配り／苦しむ者の願いを満たすなら／闇の中にあなたの光が昇り／あなたの暗闇は真昼のようになる。
11: 主は常にあなたを導き／干上がった地でもあなたの渇きを癒やし／骨を強くされる。／あなたは潤された園のように／水の涸れない水源のようになる。
12: あなたがたの中のある者は／とこしえの廃虚を建て直し／代々に続く礎を据える。／あなたは「城壁の破れを直す人」／「住めるように道を修復する人」とも呼ばれる。

いよいよ、灰の水曜日が近づくにあたって与えられるイザヤの言葉。 旧約聖書の中でも好きな箇所の一つだ。心奮い立たせ、勇気を与え、チームを鼓舞する、そんな言葉たち。どんな断食が、神に求められているのかを吟味する問いかけが繰り返しなされる。私のしようとしている断食は、神の前で本当に真摯で誠実で、心を込めたものになっていくだろうか。
今年の誕生日、心のこもったプレゼントをいただいた。 そのうちのひとつが、ある会合で皆さんが歌ってくださったハッピーバースデーの歌。全員が私のことをよく知っているわけでもなく、その時初めてお会いした方々もいるなかで、ある年配の男性が音頭を取ってくださり声を合わせて歌ってくださった。心温まるってこういうことか、と久しぶりに感じた。仲間として受け入れていただいているのだ、と思えた。
7節の英語は、 not to hide yourself from your own kin? となっていて、あなた自身の身内から自分自身を隠さないことではないのか？と訳すことができる。身内は、ここでは自分自身の家族や親戚、民族であるのと同時に、人間としてつながっている一人一人とも解釈できる。仲間である人々から、自分自身を隠さない＝見て見ぬふりをしない、無関心でいない、自分には関係ないと背を向けることをしない、ということ。つまり、仲間に対して誠実であること、自分だけ安全圏にいて隠れていてはいけない、ということ。
この仲間の範囲を広げていくのが、大事なことではないだろうか。あまりにも自分の身近な範囲のことだけしか見えなくなっている社会に変わりつつある気がする。地震が起きた時、公共放送で、自分と自分の大切な人たちの命を守るために逃げてくださいというようなアナウンスを耳にするようになったのは、いつからなんだろうか。自分と、今その場にいる最も弱い人たち、子ども、高齢者、障害のある人、病気の人を助けながら逃げましょう、という呼びかけになぜできないのかと思う。
私にハッピーバースデーを歌ってくださった皆さんは、自分とは関係ないとせず、今ここにいる誕生日を迎えた人に自分は関係あるという態度をその歌で示してくださったのだ。 こういう優しさこそが、本来の宗教に求められていることではないだろうか。
