Unending Oil
Today's scripture readings are Psalm 53; 2 Kings 4:1-7; Luke 9:10-17.
I focus on 2 Kings 4:1-7, which is a very interesting story about a widow. Elisha helps her make money in a miraculous way through unending oil. It is a kind of magical story, but it also relates to Luke 9:10-17, which is the story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with a few loaves of bread and fish. When I was a child, I believed these events actually happened. But now I don't think they are factual. What these stories tell me now is that people should support each other when someone is desperate. That is too simple to say and seems just natural. Saying is easy, but doing is harder.
